These vehicles enable pilgrims who are ill, tired or handicapped to participate fully in pilgrimages in the Sanctuary of Lourdes. Developed in the 1960s, there are now several hundred vehicles in use by pilgrims. Despite regular maintenance by Hospitaliers and the addition of a braking system in 2012, some of these vehicles are now showing signs of wear and tear, raising concerns about safety and comfort.

This is why, to mark the 140th anniversary of Hospitality of Our Lady of Lourdes, the decision was made to develop and test a new generation of 'voitures bleues'.
